I just saw Max Payne. What a piece of shit.
I hate it when people older than my generation say they were “big fans” of the game, or they’re big gamers. They all do – it’s like part of the marketing, part of the appeasement process for the gamer crowd, hoping they come out and put up some cash to see the big screen adaptation. Why, this movie was helmed by a fan! One of us!
Fuck that. You fucking bald face liars – none of you are “big fans” of the game. If you asked the Max Payne writer what his favorite mod was, or if you asked the Silent Hill director Christophe Gans what he thought of the dog ending in the second game, or if you asked the Hitman director Xavier Gens how he felt about the Japan levels in Hitman 2, they’d look at you like you were insane.
None of you people are big gamers, none of you are big fans. I guarantee you your understanding of any given game property goes about as deep as my understanding of quantum physics, which is to say, surface level and maybe having heard at one point about something to do with a cat.
Mark my words, the first decent video game adaptation will not come from anybody born before 1980.
What about David Hayter (Solid Snake)? He’s a writer (X-Men) and I’m sure he’s older than you.
He’s also played and beaten all of the games.
Word son. I feel the same way. Hitman, Max Payne, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Double Dragon, Mario Bros., all just crap attempts at making a buck in a niche market. Wow, this post is old. I’m still commenting though. That’s how I roll.
Amen…That’s all I gotta say…
I would have loved to see James McCaffrey play Max Payne in the movie, not only does he have the voice but he could have pulled the look, the model used for max payne 2 was fairly old, I’m sure he could have been made to look the part.
I replayed the 2 Max Payne games just prior to the movie, i thought it would be great, Id play the games and familiarize myself with the lore and then jump to the movie. Holy shit what a dissapointment, I didn’t even make it past the first half, I thought Wahlberg could have pulled it off, i enjoy his action movies, but after i read he didn’t want to read up anything about the game, didn’t want to play the games, All he did was read the script and play the part he was told. fucking ruined it, not only was it crap but no ones heart was in it, and fuck sam lake for letting them do it, and some people actually tell me “it wasn’t so bad” to which i reply, “wtf were you smoking, and where can i get some”.
Heres hoping the Mass Effect movie wont be a dissapointment, luckily the Directors/Producers of the game will remain onboard the movie making process.
oh and what the hell Remedy, why cant we get Alan Wake on the PC!, I Don’t own an Xbox360..
/rant
I was born in the early ’90s and I swear to God I will make a full length movie adaption of the Half-Life or Deus Ex series. And it will be great. ‘Nough Said.
yes, mr. Wong you are right about the game-movie adaptions… they all suck.
Hah, I see what you did there with the cat and the quantum physics.
<3
What about Doom director Andrzej Bartkowiak He’s well over the hill! And he did get 7 mins in the middle of the movie ‘spot on’ you think?? The rest of the movie, I agree all liars. “The all new N 3DS Black, what are your words mister Bartkowiak?” “Is this some kind of new military projekt?” “Maybe we can do a movie on thiis tooo?”
Not true. I was born in early 70′s….I had a 2600, a PS1 (I’m one of the only people I know that just never got into the NES) and xbox and an xbox360….I could go on about what a dork I am when it comes to the games I play, but there isn’t enough space here.
I’m a big fan of: Halo & MW2 (of course, although I was disappointed with Reach), Elder Scrolls, Armored Core, and the best video game ever made: Bioshock (but they probably will f that one up.)
I’ve even come up with a game show that is centered around FPS. My footage isn’t as good as your newer stuff (I shot the pitch for it in SD.) I’m also doing some work with Machinima.
So please, don’t lump everyone born before 1980 in together.
I agree, but disagree. You are definitely right about the whole marketing thing when it comes to game to movie adaptations. 90% of them suck. I was born in 73. The time of Afros, bad porn mustaches, and bell bottoms. I have loved gaming and had the majority of the major gaming systems since we had our PONG system. That’s right PONG. Now if I had the ability to create a gaming film, I know that I’d do the subject matter justice. So there are some of us ‘old’ folks who feel what you are saying. I’m not a GRUP.
I disagree, and also agree. There are many people who were born before 1980 that love modern video games. But I do agree that there hasn’t been a single good video game adaption for a movie yet. Which, in my opinion is pretty sad. Robin Williams, who was born in 1951 is probably a bigger fan of video games than I am. HE literally named his daughter Zelda. That’s commitment my friend.
